Reviews Summary
Overall, people like the PhotoPills app, finding it incredibly useful and comprehensive for planning photo shoots, particularly for landscape and night photography, with its detailed functionalities and augmented reality features, though some users noted a steep learning curve, occasional user interface clunkiness, and a lack of weather forecast and tide information.
Astonishingly useful app. The more I use it, the more amazed I am at the level of detail and functionality (and they add more regularly)! Takes a bit of work to become proficient with it but there are lots of good video tutorials online (for real, you should watch them.) Any effort you put in will be highly rewarded. A "must have" for serious photographers.

Thank you so much Alan. We'll keep improving! :)
LOVE this app! Some suggestions though - 1) It would be easier if calendar/date can be changed/set by scrolling individually by month, day, and year, instead of scrolling only by month; its easier to backtrack and/or see future moon phase or sunrise/set times this way especially for dates a year apart or 2. 2) How about a tide forecast too? Helpful to plan those seascape shoots on a certain spot accessible only at low tide; or determine how high/low tides are on a future date.

Thank you so much for the feedback :) We'll take it into account for future updates.
I've been using the app for about six months, and I must say it's extremely useful and well thought out. Following the tutorials might give you the impression that it's too complex, but once you understand the basics, it's really quite simple. Then you'll just skim the tutorials for specific advice. There are a couple things about the user interface that seem clunky, but when you actually make a plan, and see how much useful information it gives you, you will seldom need another photography app.

Hi! Thanks for the feedback. Skip the user guide and go directly to the videos we have on YouTube (youtube.com/photopills). Check the "Photo Planning Examples - English" list. If you are a fast learner you'll learn how to use the app quicker with these videos. Normally the feedback is the other way around... information explained too quickly hehe
Great program, it's improved my milky way photography so much! And it has so many other useful tools. They have great YouTube videos. But what I learned is they have great tech help. Had a problem with my AR, found them on Facebook and that I could message them which I did and was able to msg with them about my issue. They were patient and had me go through some tests and was able to figure what the problem was. So impressed! Best $9.99 I ever spent!
Post program is a terrific tool and has helps me produce some terrific images. However, the YouTube videos are terrific but I honestly can't understand half of what he's saying because of his dialect. It's a real problem at least for English speaking viewers. I've tried captions but he speaks too fast and the voice recognition is not very good. Bottom line is I don't get the message other than just watching what he's doing so I'm missing so much he has to offer.
Fantastic, but missing weather. I absolutely love this app design, very intuitive, and the amount of tools availble is unlike any other photography app I've tried. So many helpful measurements, and the ability to create shoot plans is so handy. This app would be perfect if it also included a weather forecast, and the ability to create weather/activity tracker parameters (like in the "Weather Underground" app) so you can plan your shoots around when the weather conditions would be perfect.

Thank you Ashley! We are continuously improving PhotoPills, so we'll take your feedback into account for future updates :)
Terrific app! Indispensable for landscape photography. I use it for planning things like moon and milky way alignments. Took a little while to learn because the tutorials are abundant but not super straightforward. Ultimately worth the effort. It is way more accurate than the two-dimensional apps I used to use because it can account for differences in vertical elevation. Thanks!
Been looking for a photo app for a while that pretty much does it all. And this is the one. So many wonderful features, especially for landscape photographers. So much of making a good landscape image is about planning and being able to imagine what the shot will look like before you take it. This app contains all the planning tools you'll need to capture your perfect shot. Love the milky way augmented reality. It's a game changer.
This App is fantastic, and a time saver for planning extraordinary moon, and star photography. There is quite a learning curve though, so if you are a grab and go kind of person, this may lend to some frustration for you. Luckily there are plenty of excellet tutorial videos from the developer and other photographers. What would add to the magic is if this App were accessible on Windows desktop. It is much easier to plan an event on a larger screen. Photopills, can you make that happen?
I've used this app for at least five years and it is perfect for planning photo shoots around heavenly bodies. I use it all the time for planning Milky Way shots. It has saved me countless hours of manually figuring out all the details of a MW shoot. Also the AR feature really comes in handy when scouting a location ahead of a night shoot.
