Reviews and Testimonials
Reviews Summary
People generally do not like the Google Photos app, primarily due to issues with its cloud backup insistence, constant notifications, complicated organization and album management, loss of photos, cumbersome user interface updates, and unreliable photo editing and sharing features.
Why can't we remove photos from the backup? Photos is connected to my email, so I will lose access to the ability to receive mail on one of my emails. The only ways to fix it are to delete stuff entirely, or go to the site, but that will also delete entirely if you forget to turn backup off. Being able to do all of this directly from the app would be easier. The new albums feature is also unessasary. Please give us settings to customize what extra folders show up, there are currently too many.

I would give this 5 stars for being easy to use and easy to find my pictures, but it keeps insisting on backing up to the cloud. It seems like every other week it asks me if I want to turn on backup, even though I have repeatedly said no previously, and it defaults to yes, making it easy to accidentally turn backup on and filling up my Google account, as keeps happening with my mom.
Developer response:
Hi Christopher. Thanks for letting us know, we're working on it.
I went into the app looking for something to send my sister only to discover that it's missing. Just before that I had asked the app to back up my photos to clear up space and it seems a handful had been erased entirely. I'm pretty irritated and now I'm wondering if this is a one time error or how often this happened previously and I never noticed before. I tried all the stuff the "help" section suggestions and nothing. Can't find those images or an explanation.

I sincerely hope this review is read. As an Android user, I am smart enough to backup my photos and videos to physical media. The reminder to backup my photos to the cloud kept popping up for the last several months. Just by complete accident one day I clicked the button and now my photos have taken up all 15gb. I will have to manually remove the photos to use other services again. This is ridiculous and makes me feel used. You're better than that Google.
Developer response:

Ever since the latest update, I cannot save even basic edits (cropping for example) without being forced to save as copy. I can do so on the Google photos website, so it's definitely the app. Have wasted an hour troubleshooting with suggestions on their forums and Reddit, nothing fixes it. I wish Google would stop ruining all their products that used to work well.

We're sorry to hear you're having trouble, Alexis. For Android devices, check this article: goo.gle/37eSSXM.
Destroyed my work. App says everything is backed up so I clear up space using Google photos. After this my video is gone. A lot of work went into the video. It's not the first time Google photos did the opposite of its purpose. I dont understand why in 2025 there is an app that fails so much. Response: the app told me that everything was backed up so I clicked clear up space in the app. Are you admitting that the app saying "backup complete" can't be trusted?
Developer response:
Hi Morgan. You can use Google Photos to save space on your device when you delete photos that are safely backed up. Before you use this feature, you must ensure that you've already backed up your photos properly. Learn more about how the Free up space option works: https://goo.gle/3sMNu9A.
Doesn't actually manage photos; it manages the view of photos from the cloud. Can't reorganize local image files from within the app. Pretty much pointless unless you just want to see an image and keep everything in one place. Edit: to the developer response: I literally gave my feedback here. It's the text above this edit btw, in case you're not sure.

I HATE the new organization of Collections. Now I have to click through multiple menus to find my folders, it takes longer and I don't want or need it. I also wish I could default to open on my Device folders which is what I use the most. I do not care about Memories. I hate the pop-ups that constantly ask me to back up my photos (which I do not want to do). This app gets worse and worse with every update. At least allow us to customize our default view! Please!!
Why is there a million notifications for out of storage? When you open the app, you get a screen saying out of storage, open a photo? Another out of storage notification, in phones notifications area, another one, then in email, just everywhere. Yes we know we're out of storage. Some just use it as a regular app, we don't need more storage! Also, out of storage means you can't edit album or create one or add pics to album? Can't add to favorites. This is a case of pay or horrible experience
Developer response:
Hi Meshack. Weβll attempt to notify you when youβre close to running out of storage. Learn more: goo.gle/3t4DRrK. Also, if youβre out of storage or over quota, you wonβt be able to back up additional photos & videos. If youβre over quota for two years, your content in Google Photos may be deleted: goo.gle/3NoDcZd.
Why was the annual view removed?? Photo back up is pretty good. Photo aharing has been improved to be a little easier to understand. Needs biometrics API support for archived and deleted pictures (similar to secure folder). Video playback is buggy. Also, slow motion editing and sharing both suck. If I trim or share a video I lose what I selected as slo-mo. Slo-mo playback during editing and review is jittery and unpredictable.
